Matapouri

Probably the most iconic beach on the Tutukaka coast. Reds and oranges dominate the sky in this warm, sleepy, summer dreamscape. Characteristic kiwi baches line the dunes divided by gnarly old Pohutukawa. Strange lights (a puffer fish lantern, skull torches and a bathing tiki) play on a blend of native and tropical flora in the foreground. A tall guardian tiki totem observes from above the quiet village

This shows the iconic long left hand point break at Ahipara or 'Shippes' (so called for the ship wreck that remains visible in the bay). A lone surfers longboard waits patiently for its owner to return and someones in residence at the little house in the corner of the bay. A tropical garden is a nod to the winterless norths temperate subtropical climate. Nikau and cabbage trees flank the path leading to the blue tiki. The farthest point (more or less) to surf around the rocks is known as 'blue house'....

Few of my summers are complete without surfing the classic right hand river mouth bar at Pataua. A meditative zen glass Moai dreams as the unridden sets roll through. Autumn colours soften provide a soft backdrop and the odd blue-hutukawa in seen in back drop. The tiki is based off a cast glass tiki owned by another Tutukaka artist

south piha

'South Piha" acrylic on canvas 405mmx305mm By Ants Carrie

The viewing platform or "Tasman Lookout" at south Piha is one of my favourites of all time. It reveals the unmistakable rugged black rocky beauty of the west coast, offers a grandstand view of the left hand waves peeling off the camel and lets you feel the full caress of the prevailing sou-westerly wind. My family are from piha and so I've featured my grandparents initials on a life ring, my fathers ridiculous taxidermied armadillo and dive helmet, and my mothers love of frangipani. The tiki is carved of whale bone and the remainder of the carcass lays on the foreshore with a tide ball lamp hanging from one of the ribs. A lone surfer eyes up their path through the keyhole towards the waiting surf...

Taupo Bay

'Taupo Bay' Acrylic on canvas 500mmx450mm by Ants Carrie

The monumental cliffs at the south end of Taupo bay are an unforgettable sight. This tikiscape includes a hidden rock face based off the sketches of tikis from a friends trip to Easter island in the 70s. The foreground is planted in a mixture of exotic and native plants. There is also a tiny Moa hidden in the forest.
